His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, CEO of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to promoting clean energy projects on World Energy Day 2024. He emphasised the UAE’s commitment to sustainable energy practices and its strategic alignment with the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Strategic Attention to Energy Security, the Environment, and Economic Growth
Al Tayer emphasised the significance of preserving equilibrium among environmental preservation, energy security, and sustainable economic growth. With an emphasis on raising the proportion of clean energy in the nation’s overall energy mix, these pillars form the foundation of the UAE’s long-term energy strategy. Achieving a 100% clean energy production capacity by 2050 is the goal of important national initiatives like the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.
Focus on Innovation and Research in the Energy Sector
Al Tayer also emphasised how important research and development is to advancing productivity, encouraging innovation, and boosting energy efficiency. He underlined that in addition to promoting economic growth and boosting global competitiveness, these developments are essential for lowering carbon emissions, safeguarding the environment, and conserving natural resources.
Leading Clean Energy Projects in the UAE
A number of significant initiatives were emphasised as part of the UAE’s continuous dedication to sustainable energy. One of these, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, is the biggest single-site solar park in the world created using the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. By 2030, the park hopes to reach a production capacity of more than 5,000 megawatts (MW). Other notable projects that support the UAE’s objective of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 include the 250 MW pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in Hatta and the Green Hydrogen project, which is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa.
