UAE-Morocco Collaboration to Fund Green Hydrogen Initiative with $25 Billion

Green Hydrogen

Nearly $25 billion will be invested in a revolutionary green hydrogen and ammonia project in Morocco’s Atlantic port of Dakhla, which is located in the disputed Western Sahara region, thanks to a ground-breaking partnership between the UAE and Morocco.

Approval of the Project and Secured Location

Land rights and local authorisations have already been granted by the Moroccan government to the project, which is being led by Dahamco. Tom Hanson, president of Dahamco, stressed the need of obtaining these approvals as soon as possible, ahead of Morocco’s green hydrogen development project, which was introduced in November 2022.

First Stage: High Production Objectives

The project’s initial phase is expected to cost 40 billion Moroccan dirhams ($4.04 billion) and produce about one million tonnes of green hydrogen yearly. According to Hanson, the operational start of this phase is projected for 2031.

Development in Phases to Reduce Risks

Dahamco intends to implement the project in stages in order to reduce risks and maximise expenses. It is anticipated that each new phase will start four to five years after the previous one. This tactical method guarantees a steady expansion while preserving competitiveness.

All Set to Move Forward

Dahamco is ready to proceed now that the project design is complete, co-investors are on board, and supply chains have been determined. “We have been ready to move forward for quite some time,” Hanson said, reinforcing the company’s preparedness.

A More Comprehensive Investment Environment

This project is a component of Morocco’s ambitious energy ambitions, which call for an investment of $60 billion in energy projects, of which more than 90% will be related to ammonia and green hydrogen. Taqa Morocco, AP Moller Capital of Denmark, Dahamco, Ornx Boujdour, and OCP Group, a prominent Moroccan phosphate manufacturer, are among the major investors in the industry.

Timeline for Launch Not sure

Although the project’s imminent opening was announced in Morocco’s Sabah Akadir newspaper, no precise dates have been revealed. Nonetheless, it is anticipated that the project will be crucial to Morocco’s attempts to become a global leader in the production of renewable energy.

Setting the foundation for revolutionary effects on the environment and the economy, this ambitious UAE-Morocco partnership highlights the growing global momentum towards sustainable energy solutions.
