In a significant step towards regional energy cooperation, Kuwait has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Arab Emirates to address its ongoing electricity shortage by leveraging the UAE’s expertise in renewable energy, according to a report by Kuwaiti daily Al Qabas.
The strategic agreement aims to facilitate investment in cross-border renewable energy projects, particularly in solar power, with support from Abu Dhabi-based Masdar, one of the region’s leading clean energy companies.
Citing informed sources, Al Qabas reported that the MoU marks a critical collaboration between the two Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations. It comes as Kuwait faces increasing pressure on its power grid due to soaring domestic demand and limited infrastructure development.
“This MoU is a strategic initiative designed to strengthen energy ties between the two countries and encourage renewable energy investments,” the report noted. “It aligns with Kuwait’s broader efforts to meet its energy demands and sustainability goals outlined in Vision 2035.”
Kuwait has been implementing electricity rationing measures during peak summer months, as demand outpaces supply. Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Bushehri, recently announced plans for large-scale energy projects, including the development of a solar power plant, to ease the crisis.
Bushehri highlighted Kuwait’s target to generate 30% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and 50% by 2050. These plans aim to mitigate projected power deficits, which, according to a government report, could exceed 1,000 megawatts (MW) this summer and grow to 2,500 MW by 2026.
Masdar, which is actively expanding its regional footprint, is also set to develop four solar power plants in Iraq with a combined capacity of 1,000 MW.
The UAE-Kuwait partnership underscores a growing regional push to enhance energy security through sustainable solutions and regional collaboration.
