The Philippines and the UAE will strengthen their energy partnership to increase job creation.
Through a new energy partnership with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Philippines has revealed ambitions to create jobs and enhance local skills. This comes after a preliminary deal was signed during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s formal visit to the Gulf country.
Using Multi-Sector Agreements to Strengthen Bilateral Relations
An important turning point in the development of closer relations between the two nations was President Marcos’ maiden visit to the United Arab Emirates. Both countries negotiated agreements in a number of areas, including as the digital economy, investment, culture, and artificial intelligence. According to Philippine Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla, one of the major agreements made during the visit was on energy transformation.
At the Heart of Development: Energy
Lotilla underlined that the collaboration highlights how vital energy is to advancing development. The partnership intends to take advantage of the Philippines’ drive for energy security and sustainability as well as the UAE’s cutting-edge energy solutions.
The Partnership’s Economic and Technological Advantages
Through technology transfer and capacity-building programs, the collaboration aims to draw investments in energy infrastructure, generating new employment opportunities and promoting local knowledge. It is anticipated that this collaboration will strengthen the Philippines’ energy ecosystem and increase its competitiveness in the world energy market.
Emphasis on Emerging and Renewable Technologies
Both countries will prioritize nuclear energy, renewable energy, and developing technologies under the pact. To operationalize the memorandum of understanding (MoU), an implementation agreement with a state-owned enterprise in the United Arab Emirates is expected by January of next year.
An Important Location for Emirati Energy Investments is the Philippines
Lotilla and Suhail Mohamed Faraj Al-Mazrouei, his counterpart from the UAE, talked on how to make the Philippines a top location for Emirati investments in vital energy areas. These include the creation of new energy infrastructure and renewable energy initiatives.
The Philippines’ Goals for Renewable Energy
The Philippines is still looking for clean and sustainable power solutions to deal with high electricity prices and frequent outages. Coal currently accounts for more than 50% of the nation’s power generation, making it the dominant energy source. A major move toward sustainability is indicated by the government’s Philippine Energy Plan, which seeks to raise the proportion of renewable energy from 22% to 50% by 2040.
