Energy Storage in the UAE

The UAE has made massive progress in generating energy from renewable sources. Sadly, Variable renewable energy like solar energy has intermittent supply. For example, solar panels capture sunlight and convert it to electricity. Unfortunately, solar panels can only effectively generate energy during daylight hours when the sun is out.  Therefore, one has to look into energy storage for later use. This allows for constant use of solar energy for electricity generation even when the sun is not out facilitates maintaining a balance between electricity generation and demand.

BESS Facilities

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project plays a significant role in the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and UAE Net-Zero by 2050 initiatives. These facilities further highlight the UAE’s ongoing commitment to solar and renewable energies.

BESS facilities collect and store energy generated from the grid or power plants. The facilities then release it back into the grid or supply electricity during periods of high demand. 

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park – Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage System

Another energy storage project in the UAE worth mentioning is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park – Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage System. This energy storage system is located in Seih Al-Dahal, Dubai, UAE. 

This 600,000 kW molten salt thermal storage energy storage project employs molten salt thermal storage technology. It was announced in 2018. It is set to be commissioned in 2030. 

Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Thermal Power Plant – Thermal Energy Storage System

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Thermal Power Plant – Thermal Energy Storage System is a 100,000 kW concrete thermal storage energy storage project. It is located in Seih Al-Dahal, Dubai, UAE. This thermal energy storage battery storage project uses concrete thermal storage technology. It was announced in 2017. It is expected to be commissioned in 2026.

Themar Al Emarat Microgrid Project – Battery Energy Storage System

The Themar Al Emarat Microgrid Project – Battery Energy Storage System is a 250 kW lithium-ion battery energy storage project. This electrochemical battery storage project employs lithium-ion battery storage technology. It has a rated storage capacity of 286 kWh. It was announced in 2019.

Energy Nest TES Pilot-TESS

The Energy Nest TES Pilot-TESS is a 100 kW concrete thermal storage energy storage project. This energy storage project is in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, UAE. With a rated storage capacity of 1,000 kWh, this thermal energy storage battery storage project uses concrete thermal storage technology. It was commissioned in 2015.

Final Words

As the UAE is exploring renewable energy sources, it is launching energy storage projects that will help store the energy collected. This allows for the continuous use of energy sources even when it is impractical to collect and store them.
