Forthcoming auctions will include wind-based renewable energy certificates from the UAE Wind Programme.
Registrations for the Q3 2024 auction of Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) in Abu Dhabi have been officially opened by EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company). The auction is scheduled to conclude on September 13, 2024.
Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) offer a means for Abu Dhabi-based enterprises to reduce Scope 2 emissions and decarbonise their energy consumption. These certificates allow organisations to monitor and verify their progress towards environmental objectives by verifying that the electricity they utilise is derived from renewable or clean energy sources, as specified by EWEC.
EWEC has implemented wind-based CECs in accordance with its objective to diversify the UAE’s energy portfolio and encourage decarbonisation.. These certificates are supported by electricity produced by the UAE’s inaugural utility-scale wind program, which was established following the signing of a power purchase agreement between EWEC and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar in Q4 2023.
The UAE’s energy transition is further accelerated and the decarbonisation of Abu Dhabi’s key economic sectors, including energy, industry, real estate, healthcare, sports, and events, is supported by the introduction of wind CECs, which enable EWEC to supply organisations with electricity generated from a combination of renewable and clean energy sources.

We have broadened the selection of renewable and clean energy options available by incorporating wind energy CECs into our tenders, thereby enabling organisations to achieve their sustainability objectives by utilising electricity from a diverse array of sources. Each CEC is issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy in units of one megawatt-hour (MWh). It certifies that the electricity consumed by the redeeming Abu Dhabi-based entity is sourced from a renewable or sustainable energy source.
