60MWp “SANA” project by Emerge and SNOC marks a major milestone in the emirate’s clean energy transition
Sharjah, UAE — In a landmark development for the emirate’s sustainability agenda, Sharjah has officially inaugurated its first solar power plant. Named “SANA,” the 60 megawatt-peak (MWp) ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) facility is the result of a strategic collaboration between Emerge—a joint venture between Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) and France’s EDF—and the Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC).
This pioneering project signals Sharjah’s ambitious entry into large-scale renewable energy, supporting the UAE’s broader Net Zero 2050 initiative and reinforcing the role of public-private partnerships in delivering on clean energy goals.
Powering Progress with Renewable Energy
Built on SNOC-owned land, the SANA plant is designed to supply solar-generated electricity directly to power the corporation’s operational activities. Any surplus energy will be exported to the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA), enhancing the emirate’s energy grid with clean, sustainable power.
The facility is expected to displace approximately 66,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, a significant contribution to Sharjah’s environmental commitments and the UAE’s long-term climate targets.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the project site, drew a high-profile gathering of leaders from the energy and sustainability sectors. His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, presided over the ceremony and presented a stakeholder appreciation award to Luc Koechlin, CEO of EDF Middle East, in recognition of the project’s successful execution.
