DAMASCUS: Saudi and Syrian companies have signed agreements to develop three solar power projects with a combined generation capacity of 760 megawatts (MW) in the Wadiyan Al-Rabee area of rural Damascus, marking a major step toward expanding Syria’s renewable energy capacity.
The power purchase agreements (PPAs) were signed between Saudi-based Mohammed Ahmed Al-Harfi Company and the Syrian Electricity Company.
Under the agreements, the projects will operate under PPAs lasting between 20 and 25 years, with electricity tariffs starting at around 3 US cents per kilowatt-hour.
The solar developments will also be supported by battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a combined capacity of 1,077 megawatt-hours (MWh). The storage infrastructure is expected to help improve grid stability and support the integration of renewable power into Syria’s electricity network.
Alongside the PPAs, two technical cooperation agreements were also signed with Projects Development Company (PDC), a subsidiary of Saudi Electricity Company, and Siemens Energy.
PDC will provide consultancy and engineering services for the solar projects, while Siemens Energy will support key infrastructure covering substations, power generation and battery energy storage systems.
The agreements represent a significant addition to Syria’s planned solar and energy-storage capacity and bring together Saudi, Syrian and international expertise to support the development of the country’s renewable energy sector.
The projects could also contribute to efforts to strengthen Syria’s electricity infrastructure by increasing access to locally generated renewable power and adding large-scale energy storage capacity to the grid.
