Saudi Aramco Praises China Green Tech Firms As Affordable

China Green Tech Firms

Saudi Aramco’s chief executive, Amin Nasser, has publicly acknowledged the significant role of China’s green tech firms in advancing global sustainability efforts. During the World Energy Congress, Nasser highlighted China’s pivotal contributions to reducing the costs of solar panels and electric vehicles, which are essential components of the global green transition.

China’s Impact on Green Technology Costs

Nasser emphasized that China’s mass production and innovation have been crucial in making solar energy more accessible. He noted that the affordability of solar panels has dramatically increased due to China’s efforts, which have helped lower the prices significantly. Similarly, the cost of electric vehicles produced by China green tech firms is now substantially lower than that of their Western counterparts, sometimes by as much as half. This affordability makes it easier for countries worldwide to adopt cleaner energy solutions.

Strengthening Commercial Ties with China

Saudi Aramco has been expanding its commercial partnerships with Chinese firms to secure a steady demand for its oil in the future. Recently, Aramco announced plans to acquire a 10% stake in Hengli Petrochemical, a major Chinese producer of chemicals for plastics. This move is part of Aramco’s broader strategy to increase its investments in China’s growing petrochemical market. The company also has stakes in other Chinese ventures, including a significant investment in Rongsheng Petrochemical.

The Future of Hydrocarbons and Green Energy

Despite Aramco’s commitment to reducing its operational carbon usuage to net zero by 2050, the company has yet to make plans to decrease its oil and gas production. Nasser pointed out that the majority of future hydrocarbon consumption will come from developing countries, particularly in the Global South. He also expressed concerns about the global market’s readiness for new green technologies, such as hydrogen, citing challenges in securing long-term agreements for these products.
