Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea destination has officially entered commercial operations with an integrated utilities system powered entirely by renewable energy, featuring what its developers describe as the world’s largest off-grid battery energy storage system.
Red Sea Global and ACWA Power announced the Project Commercial Operation Date (PCOD), marking a major milestone for the destination’s renewable-energy infrastructure and the beginning of a 25-year concession to operate the utilities system.
The project is being operated by Marafiq Red Sea for Energy Co. (MRSEC), which has signed a Commercial Operation Certificate with Red Sea Utilities Company, a subsidiary of Red Sea Global.
MRSEC was established by ACWA Power in partnership with SPIC Huanghe Hydropower and Saudi Tabreed to deliver and operate the energy and utilities infrastructure supporting the Red Sea development.
The renewable-powered system is designed to provide reliable electricity and essential utilities without depending on a conventional grid connection. Its large-scale battery storage capacity is expected to play a central role in maintaining a stable power supply by storing renewable energy for use when generation from sources such as solar power is unavailable.
The start of commercial operations represents a significant step in Saudi Arabia’s broader push to develop sustainable tourism destinations while reducing reliance on fossil-fuel-based electricity.
The Red Sea project is part of the Kingdom’s wider development strategy under Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economy, expand tourism and accelerate investment in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure.
With the utilities system now commercially operational, the Red Sea destination is positioned to demonstrate how large-scale tourism developments can operate using renewable energy while incorporating advanced energy-storage technology.
