Saudi Arabia and Europe Forge Stronger Clean Energy Ties with Green Hydrogen and Renewable Export Deals

Saudi Arabia and Europe

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – In a significant stride toward global clean energy cooperation, Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power has signed a series of landmark agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with major European energy players. The deals aim to establish a robust green hydrogen and renewable energy export corridor between the Kingdom and Europe, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s role in the international energy transition.

Bridging Continents Through Renewable Innovation

The high-level workshop held in Riyadh brought together senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Germany, France, and Greece, alongside top executives from global energy firms and national institutions. The event highlighted the Kingdom’s rapid progress in clean energy integration, the diversification of its energy mix, and its growing role in connecting East and West through advanced logistics and power infrastructure.

ACWA Power Signs Key MoUs with European Energy Giants

At the heart of the event was the signing of a multi-party MoU between ACWA Power and several prominent European energy firms:

  • Edison S.p.A. (Italy)
  • TotalEnergies Renewables SAS (France)
  • Zhero Europe B.V. (Italy)
  • EnBW (Germany)

These collaborations will focus on assessing European energy demand and developing large-scale renewable energy projects within Saudi Arabia. The ultimate goal: export clean electricity to European markets via high-efficiency transmission systems, creating a seamless and sustainable cross-continental energy network.

Advancing Cross-Border Transmission Capabilities

To ensure the successful export of renewable energy, ACWA Power also signed individual agreements aimed at building the infrastructure for long-distance energy transmission. Strategic partners include:

  • CESI (Italy) – Independent technical consultant
  • Prysmian (Italy) – High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable provider
  • GE Vernova
  • Siemens Energy (Germany)
  • Hitachi (France)

These partnerships will focus on the development and deployment of HVDC transmission technology—essential for transporting electricity over vast distances with minimal loss. The systems will form the backbone of new energy corridors connecting Saudi Arabia’s renewable resources to European grids.

Yanbu Green Hydrogen Hub Set for 2030 Launch

Among the most significant developments is the Joint Development Agreement between ACWA Power and Germany’s EnBW for the launch of the Yanbu Green Hydrogen Hub. Slated for commercial operation by 2030, the facility represents a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s green hydrogen ambitions.

The Yanbu hub will include:

  • Renewable power generation (solar and wind)
  • Desalination plants
  • Hydrogen electrolysis systems
  • Ammonia production units
  • A dedicated export terminal

Located strategically along global shipping routes, the Yanbu project will harness Saudi Arabia’s natural advantages—ample sunlight, wind resources, and competitive project development costs—to become a global supplier of green fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia.

A Strategic Role in the Global Energy Transition

These agreements align closely with Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to reduce the Kingdom’s dependence on fossil fuels, diversify its economy, and position it as a leader in sustainable energy. Saudi Arabia’s central role in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) also places it at the nexus of a new global energy and logistics network.

“Saudi Arabia is not only investing in the future of clean energy but shaping its global infrastructure,” said an ACWA Power spokesperson. “These collaborations demonstrate our commitment to building a greener, interconnected world.”

Looking Ahead: Energy Security and Sustainability

Beyond energy export and innovation, the agreements also emphasize regional cooperation, global energy security, and climate resilience. As countries worldwide race to meet carbon reduction goals, Saudi Arabia’s strategic partnerships with Europe are poised to play a defining role in the global shift toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.

With the Yanbu hydrogen hub and cross-border transmission projects underway, the Kingdom is set to become a key supplier and enabler in the emerging green energy economy.
