Doha, Qatar – August 2025 — In a major leap toward sustainable public transportation, Qatar’s Lusail Bus Depot has officially become the first solar-powered bus depot in the Middle East, equipped with approximately 11,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels. The facility not only reflects Qatar’s commitment to clean energy but also holds the title of the largest electric bus depot in the world, according to Guinness World Records.
The announcement was shared by the Ministry of Transport on its official X (formerly Twitter) platform, highlighting the depot’s role in driving Qatar’s green mobility goals in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
Powered by the Sun: A Renewable Energy Milestone
Situated in Lusail City, north of Doha, the depot spans more than 400,000 square meters and integrates 25,000m² of solar panel coverage. These panels generate up to 4 megawatts (MW) of electricity, providing all the energy required to power the depot’s buildings and internal systems.
The project is a key feature of Qatar’s Public Bus Infrastructure Program, which is designed to support a full-scale shift toward eco-friendly, electricity-powered public transportation. With this initiative, Qatar continues to position itself as a regional leader in clean energy and smart transport infrastructure.
Three-Zone Smart Layout for Modern Transit Operations
The Lusail Bus Depot is designed around a three-zone operational structure, each serving a distinct function:
Zone 1: This area includes nearly 500 parking bays dedicated to electric buses, all supported by 248 charging stations operating 24/7 to ensure uninterrupted service across the network.
Zone 2: This section provides accommodation for up to 1,400 staff members, alongside administrative buildings, service centers, mosques, security offices, and recreational and commercial facilities—creating a fully self-sufficient environment for depot personnel.
Zone 3: The final section is allocated to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) e-buses, featuring 24 parking bays and 24 high-capacity electric chargers to support this expanding mode of transport.
Centralized Operations: Monitoring in Real Time
Overseeing the depot’s activity is a sophisticated Operation Control Center (OCC), housed within a 39,000m² facility. The OCC serves as the nerve center of Qatar’s electric bus network, offering real-time monitoring and command capabilities for all bus-related operations, from route management to maintenance scheduling and energy consumption tracking.
A Vision for Sustainable, Integrated Transport
The Ministry of Transport emphasized that the Lusail Bus Depot is part of a broader vision to build a reliable, integrated, and technologically advanced transport system. In collaboration with Qatar’s executive authorities, the Ministry has been implementing large-scale infrastructure upgrades aimed at modernizing land transport in line with international standards and sustainability best practices.
As part of the Qatar National Vision 2030, the Public Bus Infrastructure Program is integrating Doha Metro, tram lines, and public buses into a coherent, unified transportation system. The aim is to reduce carbon emissions, enhance urban connectivity, and support economic and environmental resilience.
Setting a Regional Benchmark
With the successful implementation of the Lusail Bus Depot, Qatar is setting a regional benchmark for smart, green public transit infrastructure. The depot is not only a feat of engineering and sustainability but also a tangible representation of the country’s dedication to clean energy, smart urban development, and mobility innovation.
As more Gulf nations explore eco-friendly transport models, Qatar’s solar-powered bus depot stands as a model of sustainable infrastructure, offering a roadmap for the Middle East’s transition to low-emission, renewable-powered public transport networks.
