Complying with the Equitable Energy Transition Paris Agreement
By advocating for equitable energy transitions that give developing countries priority, the proposed treaty seeks to supplement the Paris Agreement. Pakistan, one of the nations most affected by climate change, is the first country in South Asia to participate in this project. The treaty calls on wealthier countries to spearhead the global switch to renewable energy in order to address serious climate challenges including devastating flooding and increasing temperatures.
Taking the Global Stage to Promote Climate Justice
During COP29, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif advocated for international assistance for countries that are at risk due to climate change. His support draws attention to Pakistan’s tenacity and environmentally conscious initiatives.
Environmental Sustainability Initiatives at Home
In order to promote environmental sustainability, Pakistan is acting proactively. The New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy is one such program that seeks to switch 30% of all new cars, both domestically and internationally, to electric power by 2030. The government’s overarching goal of lowering dependency on fossil fuels and enhancing environmental quality is in line with this policy.
Financial Rewards to Promote the Adoption of EVs
The government has set aside PKR 4 billion in subsidies to support the NEV Policy. This action aims to reduce the substantial energy use of the transport industry, which makes up 30% of the country’s total usage, by hastening the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Around $1.3 billion is spent on energy each month in the transport industry, which puts a significant strain on the economy and foreign exchange reserves.
Addressing Urban Smog and Air Pollution
The widespread use of EVs is seen by environmentalists as a revolutionary solution to the persistent smog issues in urban areas and a reduction in air pollution. Better air quality and enhanced public health will result from EV use’s reduced greenhouse gas emissions and particulate matter.

It is anticipated that the NEV Policy will spur modernisation and innovation in Pakistan’s car sector. Local EV production can improve the economy, give access to cutting-edge car models, and lessen dependency on antiquated imports. Although the government has implemented subsidies, experts advise taking further steps to make EVs more widely available, such as offering tax advantages and low-interest financing options.
