Creating Clean Energy to Support the Growth of AI
MUSCAT: To support its Artificial Intelligence (AI) projects, the Sultanate of Oman is actively developing sustainable energy solutions through the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology.
Getting Ready for AI’s Increasing Energy Needs
The importance of AI’s future energy usage was underlined by Eng Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, during a recent media conference. “AI servers will consume almost 30% of the world’s electricity by 2050,” he said. This rise indicates a significant shift in the world’s energy usage since it reflects a demand that does not yet exist. Oman needs to be prepared for this change in order to use AI for economic expansion and national advancement.
Nuclear Energy’s Place in AI Infrastructure
To fulfill their AI energy needs, top tech companies are already investing in nuclear energy, the minister said. For instance, Microsoft has secured nuclear energy supplies and intends to activate the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor in the United States, while Google is building six Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) for AI data centers.
He clarified, “Despite its high cost, nuclear power is a viable alternative because AI data centers demand enormous amounts of electricity. SMR reactors cost between 6 and 11 cents per kilowatt-hour to operate.
The Benefit of Renewable Energy in Oman
Oman has a considerable advantage when it comes to renewable energy resources, especially in areas like Al Wusta. In order to develop local AI energy solutions, the minister emphasized ongoing talks with the Ministry of Energy, which may involve private sector participation.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that data centers used between 240 and 340 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity, which represents 1–1.3% of the world’s total energy consumption. According to the agency’s 2024 assessment, by the following year, the amount of electricity used for bitcoin operations, data centers, and artificial intelligence will have doubled.

Oman wants to become a pioneer in sustainable AI infrastructure by utilizing its potential for renewable energy. In addition to bolstering AI aspirations, the government’s dedication to sustainable energy development will enhance the nation’s economy and technology more broadly.
