Masdar Transfers Stake in Sharjah Waste-to-Energy Plant to Tadweer Group, Signaling New Chapter in UAE’s Sustainability Drive

Masdar Transfers Stake

Sharjah, UAE – In a strategic move aimed at refining their core focuses, Masdar—the UAE’s flagship renewable energy company—has officially agreed to divest its stake in the Sharjah Waste-to-Energy plant to Tadweer Group, a leader in integrated waste management and energy recovery. The decision, reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM), is subject to customary closing conditions.

This transition marks a new phase for the plant, bringing Tadweer Group together with BEEAH Group, a sustainability pioneer, as joint venture partners under the Emirates Waste-to-Energy Company, which owns and operates the region’s first commercial-scale waste-to-energy facility.

Strategic Realignment: Masdar and Tadweer Focus on Core Missions

The acquisition reflects a strategic realignment between two key players in the UAE’s sustainability sector. Masdar, officially known as Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC, will sharpen its focus on expanding clean energy capacity globally, while Tadweer Group strengthens its footprint in waste-to-value projects within the UAE and prepares for international expansion.

According to Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, the project has been a key part of the company’s impact in the UAE. “We are proud of the role this initiative has played in the country’s sustainability progress. As we transfer our stake, we trust that Tadweer and BEEAH will continue to advance the plant with strong leadership and vision,” he said.

A First in the Middle East: Sharjah’s Trailblazing Energy Plant

Inaugurated in 2022, the Sharjah Waste-to-Energy plant is the first of its kind in the Middle East. Designed to convert non-recyclable waste into electricity, the plant is critical to the UAE’s strategy to reduce landfill dependency, improve waste management, and transition to a more sustainable energy mix.

The Emirates Waste-to-Energy Company now plans to double the plant’s power output from 30 MW to 60 MW. Additionally, the facility aims to boost its processing capacity for hard-to-recycle waste and displace twice as many carbon emissions, pushing it to the forefront of climate-positive infrastructure in the region.

Tadweer and BEEAH Unite for the Next Phase

With Masdar stepping away, Tadweer Group and BEEAH Group will jointly own and operate the plant. Their combined expertise in waste management, recycling, and sustainable urban development will guide the project’s expansion.

Ali Al Dhaheri, CEO of Tadweer Group, described the acquisition as a “high-performing asset” that fits squarely within the company’s growth ambitions. “This plant enhances our capabilities and supports the UAE’s goal of becoming a global leader in waste-to-energy innovation,” he said.

Khaled Al Huraimel, CEO of BEEAH Group, added, “We thank Masdar for their partnership and look forward to a new era of growth alongside Tadweer. This milestone represents a regional benchmark in sustainable energy conversion.”

Masdar Strengthens Global Green Finance Leadership

While stepping back from waste-to-energy, Masdar is actively scaling up its international clean energy initiatives. In May 2025, the company issued an additional $1 billion green bond, bringing its total green bond issuance to $2.75 billion—solidifying its role as a global leader in sustainable finance.

The bond, released in two $500 million tranches with maturities of 5 and 10 years and competitive coupon rates of 4.875% and 5.375%, drew overwhelming investor interest. The issuance reached a peak order book of $6.6 billion, with 85% of the allocation going to international investors—a strong signal of global confidence in Masdar’s environmental mission.

Expanded Green Finance Framework and New Global Projects

In March 2025, Masdar updated its Green Finance Framework, broadening the scope to include emerging areas like green hydrogen and battery storage systems. Moody’s reaffirmed its top-tier Sustainability Quality Score of SQS1 (Excellent) for the revised framework.

To date, Masdar has already issued $6 billion in non-recourse financing in 2024 alone to develop over 11 gigawatts of clean energy capacity across 12 projects in nine countries, further accelerating its role in the global clean energy transition.

A United Front for UAE’s Clean Energy Vision

The transition of the Sharjah Waste-to-Energy plant from Masdar to Tadweer Group demonstrates the UAE’s dynamic and collaborative approach to sustainability. As Masdar channels its capital toward clean energy mega-projects, Tadweer and BEEAH are set to lead the charge in localized waste-to-energy innovation, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to a greener, more circular economy.

This evolving partnership stands as a testament to how strategic realignment and public-private collaboration can drive lasting impact—both in the region and on the global stage.
