Work on the Al Ajban Solar Project Starts

The ambitious 1.5 GW Al Ajban solar project in Abu Dhabi has formally begun construction by the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). EDF Renewables Middle East is leading this historic project in partnership with Masdar and Korea Western Power Co. (KOWEPO).

The Al Ajban Solar Project’s salient features

In order to maximise efficiency and energy output, the Al Ajban solar project will have more than 3 million solar panels installed on single-axis trackers. It is anticipated that the project will generate enough electricity to power about 160,000 houses when it goes online in the third quarter of 2026. Additionally, by cutting carbon dioxide emissions by more than 2.4 million tonnes per year, the initiative hopes to make a substantial contribution to environmental sustainability.

Financial Achievements and Collaborations

With support from six major banks, including BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole CIB, and HSBC Middle East, the Al Ajban project reached financial close in September, marking an important milestone. EDF Renewables and KOWEPO each own 20% of the project, while Masdar owns the rest of 60%. The consortium will design, finance, build, and run the facility as part of a 30-year Power Purchase Agreement with EWEC.

Conformity to the Net-Zero Strategy of the UAE

A key element of the UAE’s Net-Zero by 2050 strategic goal is the Al Ajban solar project. It is Abu Dhabi’s third utility-scale solar park, demonstrating the nation’s dedication to developing infrastructure for renewable energy.

Masdar’s Goals for Renewable Energy

Masdar is leading the way in the field of renewable energy, developing technology for solar, wind, geothermal, battery storage, and green hydrogen. By 2030, the company wants to establish itself as a major producer of green hydrogen and reach a 100 GW renewable energy portfolio.

Cooperation on the Al Maktoum Solar Park by Mohammed bin Rashid

A related milestone is the signing of a deal between Masdar and the Dubai Water and Electricity Authority (DEWA) to build and run the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park’s 1.8 GW sixth phase. At AED 5.51 billion (about $1.55 billion), this project is a major step in the right direction towards the UAE’s renewable energy targets.

The Contributions of KOWEPO and EDF Renewables

A key component of the Al Ajban project is EDF Renewables, which is expected to have a net installed capacity of 12.8 GW by the end of 2023. With a strategic objective of obtaining 25% of its production from renewable sources by 2030, South Korea’s KOWEPO is also growing its global presence in renewable energy. These alliances demonstrate the expanding global cooperation in promoting sustainable energy initiatives.

A Step in the Direction of Sustainability

In addition to demonstrating Abu Dhabi’s aspirations for sustainable energy, the Al Ajban solar project marks a critical turning point in international efforts to tackle climate change. The United Arab Emirates keeps paving the road for a sustainable future by utilising state-of-the-art technology and international collaboration.
