January 20, 2025 A historic collaboration to create the world’s first large-scale, round-the-clock giga-scale project was announced on January 17 by CATL and Masdar, the renewable energy pioneer in the United Arab Emirates. This project represents a major advancement in clean energy innovation by combining solar power generation with battery energy storage (BESS) in Abu Dhabi.
An Investment of $6 Billion in Clean Energy
The project, which has cost more than $6 billion, combines 19 GWh of energy storage with 5.2 GW of solar energy output. It can provide 1 GW of continuous baseload electricity every day of the week, making it the largest solar and BESS plant in the world. The project establishes a new international standard for the development of sustainable energy.
A Strategic Partnership for Excellence
Regarding the project’s ambition, Masdar Chief Operating Officer Abdulaziz Alobaidli said: “As Masdar’s largest and most ambitious project to date, we made sure we are working with the best possible partners that will deliver to the highest standards.”
Masdar is positioned to accomplish previously unheard-of achievement in renewable energy developments because to this strategic partnership.
The Innovative TENER Technology of CATL
CATL will provide the project with its cutting-edge TENER technology, which is intended to maximise efficiency, longevity, and safety. The technology offers a state-of-the-art answer to contemporary energy problems by guaranteeing the project’s dependable and stable functioning under a variety of circumstances. CATL’s significance in transforming renewable energy is further cemented by improvements to the energy storage system’s efficiency and protection level.
Masdar’s Purpose for Worldwide Sustainability
Since its founding in 2006, Masdar has spearheaded the UAE’s ambition to lead the world in climate change and sustainability. Masdar is on course to grow its portfolio of renewable energy to 100 GW by 2030, securing its position as a global leader in clean energy, with projects in more than 40 countries.
