Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said an Iranian attack damaged a power generation and water desalination facility, causing disruptions to several electricity generation units and triggering a fire.
In a statement issued Friday, the ministry said emergency response plans were activated immediately to limit the impact of the incident and safeguard the stability of the country’s national electricity grid.
Firefighters successfully contained the blaze, while technical and emergency crews began assessing the extent of the damage, securing the site and working to restore affected power generation units as quickly as possible.
Earlier, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that its Aerospace Force had targeted a US military base in Kuwait during what it described as the 12th phase of a retaliatory military operation, according to the semi-official Mehr News Agency.
The IRGC claimed the strike hit a missile defense detection and tracking radar, multiple weapons storage facilities, two High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers and missile stockpiles. It also alleged that the attack caused a large fire at the military base.
The latest incident comes amid heightened regional tensions that have persisted since February, when the United States and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Gulf states hosting US military installations.
Although Iran and the United States signed a Pakistan-brokered memorandum of understanding last month aimed at reducing hostilities and pursuing a long-term peace agreement, tensions have escalated again in recent days as both sides exchange attacks linked to the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
