KAUST Finds the Red Sea’s Top 10 Sites for Solar and Wind Energy Storage

Research Finds the Best Sites for Storing Renewable Energy

In a ground-breaking study, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) identified the top ten best locations in the Red Sea region for solar and wind energy storage. It is anticipated that these sites will be crucial in furthering Saudi Arabia’s transition to renewable energy.

In favor of Saudi Vision 2030

The results of this study support food security, water resource management, and the integration of renewable energy, all of which are in line with Saudi Vision 2030. The Saudi Press Agency claims that the designated sites will support the Kingdom’s endeavors to produce at least 50% of its electricity from renewable sources.

The Potential for Renewable Energy in the Kingdom

Saudi Arabia has enormous potential for wind and solar energy, thus switching to renewables is a top strategic objective. However, effective storage methods are necessary to guarantee a steady energy supply. To achieve sustainability targets, the energy sector, which was responsible for almost half of the nation’s carbon dioxide emissions in 2022, needs to shift significantly.

Energy Storage Difficulties

Professor Yoshihide Wada, the study’s leader, claims that efficiently storing energy for use during times of peak demand is a major obstacle to the adoption of renewable energy. Infrastructure that can store excess energy from cooler months for use during hotter seasons is necessary since electricity demand varies greatly between winter and summer.

Examining Potential Energy Storage Options

The Kingdom is making investments in battery storage systems that are made for regular energy cycles in order to overcome this difficulty. But Saudi Arabia is also looking at seasonal pumped hydro storage as a backup plan to guarantee long-term energy storage.

The Possibility of Seasonal Pumped Hydro Storage

High-altitude reservoirs are used to store desalinated water for seasonal pumped hydro storage. The stored water can be released to provide water and electricity when the need for energy increases. Although this technology has two advantages, its high cost necessitates careful preparation.

Technical and Financial Aspects

The estimated cost of each seasonal pumped hydro storage plant is around $10 billion, thus choosing the right location is crucial. Scientists assessed a number of factors, such as water salinity, water evaporation rates, and the vicinity of solar or wind power facilities, to make sure the project was feasible.

The KAUST study demonstrates the Kingdom’s dedication to the advancement of renewable energy. In keeping with Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia is making great strides toward a robust and sustainable energy future by determining the best places for energy storage.
