A New Alliance is Announced by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST)

A major partnership between King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and NEOM has been revealed, with the goal of driving the development of Saudi Arabia’s green economy. Technology related to hydrogen and sustainable fuels will evolve more quickly as a result of this strategic alliance.

Emphasis on Sustainable Fuel Technologies and Hydrogen

The cooperation is centred on three cutting-edge research initiatives aimed at creating sustainable fuel generation technologies and hydrogen. An important step towards developing the Kingdom’s green energy industry is this program.

Assistance provided by the Education, Research, and Innovation Foundation of NEOM

Research on using hydrogen as a renewable energy source is being funded by NEOM’s Education, Research, and Innovation Foundation through the Hydrogen and E-Fuels Applied Research Institute (HEFARI). This backing demonstrates NEOM’s dedication to leading the way in sustainable energy solutions.

Presenting Advancements at the KAUST Summit

At a recent summit at the KAUST Research and Technology Park, scientists and researchers from KAUST presented their latest findings. Senior leaders from a number of prominent organisations, including NEOM, HEFARI, INOWA, Imperial College, Saudi Aramco, HyET, Cruise Saudi, Next7, and Dow, were present throughout the two-day event.

Highlights of the Summit: Sustainable Applications and Green Hydrogen

The economic generation of green hydrogen and ammonia, as well as their crucial roles in sustainable aviation fuel and marine propulsion, were among the main topics of discussion during the summit. The development of crucial technologies including electrolysers, sophisticated catalysts, and membranes was also discussed at the summit.

Meeting the Requirements for Manufacturing, Transportation, and Storage

Examining the crucial facets of producing, shipping, and storing these technologies, participants emphasised their significance in the shift to a green economy.

Heading Up Research Projects at KAUST

Three distinguished KAUST faculty members are spearheading the three HEFARI-funded research initiatives. Expert in mechanical engineering Professor William Roberts is concentrating on developing fuels for marine engines that are carbon neutral. Chemical engineering expert Professor Mani Sarathy is attempting to lower the price of large-scale electrolysis technology for the production of greener hydrogen. Green ammonia is being used as fuel by Assistant Professor Thibaut Guiberti to solve emissions from engines and turbines.

Endorsing Saudi Arabia’s Objectives for Renewable Energy

This collaboration supports Saudi Arabia’s aspirational goals to become the world’s foremost producer and supplier of green hydrogen and to obtain 50% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. It also helps the Kingdom reach its goal of using the circular carbon economy to become carbon neutral by 2060.
