AMMAN — Jordan has taken another step toward expanding its renewable energy capacity after signing a new engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) agreement with the UAE for a 25-megawatt wind power project in Ma’an Governorate.
Jordan’s Samra Electric Power Generation Company signed the contract with SITE Technology General Contracting to build the wind farm at Batn Al Ghul. The project, which will be fully financed by the UAE government, includes the design, supply, and installation of five wind turbines.
The initiative forms part of a wider energy cooperation framework agreed upon in February between Jordan’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar). The partnership is aimed at accelerating renewable energy development and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the clean energy sector.
The Batn Al Ghul wind project supports Jordan’s long-term strategy to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependence on conventional fuels. Renewable energy currently contributes around 27% of the country’s electricity generation, while authorities are targeting more than 30% by 2030 through additional investments in solar, wind, and energy storage infrastructure.
Jordan is also pursuing more ambitious clean energy goals under its 2025–2035 national energy strategy, approved earlier this year. The roadmap seeks to increase the renewable share of the electricity mix to 40% by 2035 while expanding wind and solar generation and advancing green hydrogen initiatives.
According to Jordan’s state news agency Petra, the new wind project is expected to enhance energy security, support sustainable economic development, and help meet rising electricity demand through environmentally friendly power generation. Officials also described the initiative as another milestone in the strategic partnership between Jordan and the UAE, reflecting both countries’ commitment to sustainable development.
Masdar Strengthens Renewable Energy Portfolio in Jordan
The latest agreement builds on Masdar’s growing presence in Jordan’s renewable energy market.
In June, Jordanian Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan met with Masdar Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi to discuss expanding the company’s investments across the kingdom. The discussions included proposed wind energy developments with a combined capacity of approximately 2,000 megawatts, with technical studies nearing completion before project execution begins.
During the meeting, the prime minister highlighted the UAE-funded Batn Al Ghul wind farm as a key component of Jordan’s efforts to increase renewable electricity generation and reinforce long-term energy security.
Masdar has already established a significant footprint in Jordan through major renewable energy projects. The company operates the 200 MW Baynouna Solar Power Plant, the country’s largest solar facility, and owns a 50% stake in the 117 MW Tafila Wind Farm, further strengthening its role in Jordan’s clean energy transition.
