Jordan and Chinese Firm Sign MoU to Explore Green Hydrogen Project Near Aqaba

MoU

Jordan is moving ahead with plans to assess a major green hydrogen development near the port of Aqaba after the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chinese company Getting International Energy Holdings Co Ltd.

The agreement will pave the way for technical studies into a potential integrated green hydrogen project that could bring together renewable energy generation, water desalination, green hydrogen and ammonia production, energy storage, electricity transmission, and associated logistics and port services.

Under the MoU, Getting International Energy Holdings will prepare a pre-feasibility study to determine the project’s technical and economic potential. The assessment will examine environmental and social considerations, expected production costs, land requirements and other factors that could influence the project’s development.

The study will also evaluate the proposed integrated value chain, from renewable power generation and desalination to hydrogen and ammonia production and related infrastructure. Its findings are expected to provide Jordan with a technical and economic basis for deciding whether to proceed with the project.

Jordanian Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Saleh Kharabsheh said the agreement reflects efforts to deepen economic and investment cooperation between Jordan and China, particularly in the emerging green hydrogen sector.

The initiative follows a recent royal visit to China and forms part of Jordan’s broader strategy to attract investment and develop cooperation in clean energy technologies.

Jordan is seeking to advance its national green fuel strategy by developing green hydrogen and its derivatives as sustainable energy sources. The proposed Aqaba project could support those ambitions while leveraging the port’s strategic location and associated infrastructure.
