Recent instability in the Middle East has triggered a global oil shock not witnessed since the 1970s. The crisis escalated after a US strike on Iran, which led to the disruption of the Strait of Hormuz — a critical maritime corridor through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply typically passes.
In response, the US administration has reportedly imposed a blockade on Iranian ports, a move that has done little to stabilise an already volatile situation.
The environmental cost of fossil fuel dependence has long been established, and many countries have already begun the gradual transition toward cleaner energy systems. In an ideal scenario, such an oil shock might accelerate that shift. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned, global reliance on fossil fuels continues to undermine both climate stability and international security.
However, the current crisis appears to be producing the opposite outcome.
Short-term security concerns overriding climate goals
Several oil-producing nations are now reconsidering expanded domestic drilling, framing it as a matter of “energy security.” While such measures may appear pragmatic in the short term, critics argue they risk deepening long-term dependence on carbon-intensive fuels at a time when reduction is urgently needed.
At the same time, rising oil and gas prices have generated significant profits for fossil fuel companies. Much of this capital is being reinvested into further exploration and extraction projects, effectively reinforcing existing fossil fuel infrastructure and delaying the transition to cleaner alternatives.
Compounding the issue, reduced flows of liquefied natural gas (LNG) have led some major energy consumers, including India and China, to increase reliance on coal — currently the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel — in order to meet immediate energy demands.
Renewable transition losing momentum
Rather than accelerating the shift to renewable energy, the crisis is reinforcing global dependence on fossil fuels. Analysts suggest that geopolitical instability and energy insecurity are driving governments toward short-term solutions that may lock in emissions for decades to come.
Calls for a ceasefire and diplomatic resolution have been widely made, but are unlikely to directly address the structural energy challenges now unfolding.
Former US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly dismissed climate change concerns, has maintained policies aimed at expanding fossil fuel production while reducing incentives for renewable energy investment. His administration has also faced criticism for redirecting support away from offshore wind development in favour of conventional energy projects.
Energy debates intensify in Europe
In Ireland, the broader fuel price crisis has sparked public protests and political debate. Demonstrations included disruptions and blockades, reflecting widespread frustration over rising living costs.
Protesters have highlighted that a significant portion of fuel prices is tax-related, arguing that increases in global prices create additional fiscal pressure on consumers. This has led to renewed discussion around fuel taxation policy, with some concessions introduced in response to public concern.
However, environmental policy experts caution against weakening carbon taxes, noting that revenue from such measures is intended to support Ireland’s transition toward renewable energy and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels.
Despite this, carbon taxation continues to face political opposition, often framed by critics as unnecessarily burdensome, rather than as part of long-term climate strategy.
Untapped renewable potential
Ireland, in particular, is seen as having strong natural advantages in offshore wind energy. Yet development has been slow compared with countries such as Denmark and Spain. Currently, Ireland has only one offshore wind farm, which is being decommissioned, while other proposed projects remain stalled in planning processes.
Observers argue that the current energy crisis should serve as a catalyst for accelerating renewable infrastructure development and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.
A turning point or a setback?
While previous oil shocks, such as those in the 1970s, contributed to long-term energy restructuring, the outcome of the current crisis remains uncertain. Analysts suggest it could either reinforce fossil fuel dependency or, alternatively, provide the political urgency needed to expand renewable energy adoption.
Dr Cormac O’Raifeartaigh, senior lecturer in physics at the South East Technological University in Waterford and fellow of the Institute of Physics, argues that the direction chosen now will shape energy systems for decades to come.
