EGA Rejects Plans for Nuclear Power in Indonesia
After receiving clarity from the Indonesian government, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) is now aggressively investigating sustainable energy prospects in Indonesia. This follows EGA’s denial of earlier allegations that it was involved in the construction of a nuclear power plant in the nation.
The Indonesian Government’s Updated Statement
In a recent release, Indonesia’s Ministry of Economic Affairs corrected an earlier statement that claimed EGA intended to build a nuclear power plant with a maximum capacity of five gigawatts. The update emphasises Indonesia’s continuous attempts to find low-carbon energy sources for industrial development, especially for the expansion of aluminium smelting in North Sumatra.
Indonesia’s Energy Demand and Industrial Growth
Despite not having any nuclear power plants in operation at the moment, Indonesia is eager to draw in international capital to expand its mineral processing sector. Indonesia has been establishing itself as a significant player in the global metal refining industry thanks to its enormous reserves of nickel, copper, and bauxite. Since 2022, when it committed to assisting Indonesia Asahan Aluminium in increasing its smelting capacity by up to 400,000 tonnes annually, EGA has been involved in these talks.
Indonesian Economic Minister Meets with EGA CEO
EGA CEO Abdulnasser Ibrahim Saif Bin Kalban and Indonesia’s Senior Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto met in Dubai on Wednesday to talk about the country’s aluminium manufacturing prospects. During his visit to the World Government Summit, Hartarto met with Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, a renewable energy corporation based in the United Arab Emirates.
Indonesian Renewable Energy Initiatives
Updates on Indonesia’s renewable energy initiatives, such as the construction of a gas pipeline linking Aceh and East Java and the 145 megawatt floating solar power plant in West Java, were among the main subjects of these sessions. These programs complement Indonesia’s overarching plan to promote sustainable industrial growth and improve energy security.
