Her transformation from a conventional concentration on the oil and gas industry to a pioneer in investing in renewable energy is remarkable and groundbreaking.
Oil & Gas to Clean Energy Transition
Maryam dreamed of working in the UAE’s oil and gas sector while attending UAE University in Al Ain. But her career took a completely different turn when she visited Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City while enrolled in an industrial training program. She changed her concentration from fossil fuels to renewables as a result of eco-friendly advancements and a mentorship program at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. “I had a strong interest in the oil and gas industry when I first started engineering. However, my stay at Masdar Institute altered my viewpoint, and I decided that the renewables sector was the one I wanted to concentrate on,” Maryam remarked.
Smashing Obstacles and Succeeding in a Novel Field
Motivated by her discovered interest, Maryam attended the Masdar Institute to complete her master’s program in engineering systems and management, where she excelled and graduated first in her class in 2016. Coming from a conservative home and working in a mixed-gender workplace with a wide range of backgrounds made the adjustment difficult. “It was a bit challenging at the beginning, but it was such an enriching experience,” she said. Throughout her journey, her willingness to venture outside of her comfort zone has been a defining characteristic.
Integrating Financial and Technical Knowledge
Maryam promptly became aware of the value of enhancing her engineering expertise with financial understanding after beginning her career at Masdar in 2016 as an analyst. She worked towards earning professional credentials in order to develop a thorough grasp of investing, which was very helpful in her position. Her perseverance and commitment have paid off, giving her the opportunity to oversee significant projects throughout Southeast Asia, the CIS, and the Middle East.
Steering Clean Energy Initiatives in Emerging Markets
Maryam has been instrumental in commercial development and investment in the CIS during the last four years, having contributed to the establishment of Masdar’s presence in nations such as Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. “I introduce cutting-edge technology and Masdar’s experience to new markets globally. She underlined, “These projects help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and provide thousands of homes with clean, reliable energy.”

Maryam maintains strong ties to her hometown of Ras Al Khaimah even though she plays a prominent role in international sustainable energy initiatives. She has been very supportive of her work choices, and she makes it a point to spend time with her family every weekend. She said, “They have been incredibly supportive of my career choice,” encapsulating the mindset of a new generation of Emirati women who defy expectations and tenaciously follow their passions.
