Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has signed a strategic Collaboration Framework Agreement with Masdar, reinforcing efforts to fast-track renewable energy development across the United Arab Emirates.
The agreement sets out a structured roadmap to accelerate the rollout of utility-scale clean energy projects, supporting the UAE’s push to diversify its energy mix, enhance supply security, and drive industrial growth. A key focus of the framework is maximizing In-Country Value while nurturing local talent and technical expertise.
The deal was formalized by EWEC CEO Ahmed Ali Alshamsi and Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi. It aims to streamline Masdar’s involvement across the full project lifecycle—from early-stage development to financial close—while maintaining transparency within EWEC’s competitive procurement processes.
The partnership builds on a portfolio of major renewable projects, including Al Dhafra, Al Ajban, and Khazna solar photovoltaic plants, as well as a large-scale “round-the-clock” solar and battery storage initiative. Officials say the new framework will enhance efficiency without compromising governance standards.
Alshamsi described the agreement as a critical step in advancing the UAE’s energy transition, noting that EWEC is targeting 60% of Abu Dhabi’s energy demand to come from renewable and clean sources by 2035. Plans include scaling solar capacity beyond 30 gigawatts and integrating over 8 gigawatts of battery storage to ensure reliable supply.
Al Ramahi emphasized that the strengthened collaboration will help deliver large-scale clean energy solutions, boost national energy security, and provide affordable, sustainable power to support local industries.
Renewable energy remains central to Abu Dhabi’s long-term strategy, with EWEC aiming to enable near emissions-free water production by 2030. The broader initiative aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 goals.
Separately, Masdar City continues to advance its sustainability credentials, recently earning LEED Communities Platinum certification for its Phase 1 development, further cementing its role as a model for sustainable urban living.
