Strategic Partnership for Clean Energy in Healthcare
The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) and Burjeel Holdings have forged a strategic partnership to power 22 healthcare facilities across Abu Dhabi using clean energy. This initiative, facilitated through Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), marks a significant step in advancing sustainability within the healthcare sector.
Clean Energy Certificates and Sustainability Goals
CECs are the sole recognized instrument in Abu Dhabi for tracking electricity sourced from renewable and clean energy. They enable organizations to verify their clean energy consumption, helping to mitigate Scope 2 emissions and align with broader carbon neutrality goals.
Commitment to Decarbonization and Net Zero Goals
The agreement underscores Burjeel Holdings’ commitment to environmental responsibility and bolsters efforts by both organizations to drive decarbonization in line with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.
EWEC’s Perspective on the Collaboration
Francois Brice, Executive Director of Commercial and Fuel Management at EWEC, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating:

EWEC continues to advocate for the adoption of the DoE’s CEC scheme, which supports organizations in accelerating the decarbonization of their operations. Each CEC, issued in one-megawatt-hour units, functions as a tradable digital certificate adhering to the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard), ensuring transparency and accountability in clean energy consumption.
