Abu Dhabi, UAE – Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has entered into a landmark clean energy agreement with Al-Futtaim IKEA, enabling the retailer’s Abu Dhabi outlets to run entirely on renewable electricity. The collaboration marks a major step forward in corporate climate responsibility and aligns with the UAE’s wider decarbonisation efforts.
Al-Futtaim IKEA will receive Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) from EWEC as part of the new arrangement, which will cover all of the power used at all four of its Abu Dhabi sites. The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) formally issues these certificates, which are the sole approved verification of electricity generated in the emirate from clean and renewable sources.
The deal emphasizes Al-Futtaim IKEA’s dedication to sustainability, especially with regard to cutting Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions, which are caused by the purchase of electricity. The business is making sure its environmental statements are clear, verifiable, and compliant with international standards by utilizing CECs.

CECs are issued in units of one megawatt-hour (MWh) and follow the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard), ensuring international recognition and traceability of clean energy usage.
This partnership advances the DoE’s Clean Energy Strategic Target 2035 and advances EWEC’s objective to increase the use of renewable energy across sectors. Additionally, it supports the UAE’s larger goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050 by demonstrating how public-private collaboration can result in quantifiable environmental advancement.
