Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has reviewed progress on the second phase of major energy projects aimed at reinforcing the country’s national electricity grid, according to presidential spokesperson Mohamed El Shenawy.
During a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat, the president discussed steps to speed up the rollout of solar energy initiatives and battery storage systems. The projects form part of a broader national plan to raise renewable energy’s share of the country’s energy mix to 45% within the next two years.
El-Sisi stressed the importance of coordinated efforts to enhance electricity supply, improve the efficiency of conventional fuel use, and maintain grid stability, while ensuring strict adherence to implementation timelines. He reaffirmed that these measures are central to Egypt’s strategy for advancing its green energy transition and supporting sustainable development goals.
Minister Esmat outlined that the second phase includes around 105 projects, with ongoing work to integrate renewable energy sources into the national grid by 2027. These projects span both solar and wind power developments.
He also highlighted the operational launch of the first phase of the Obelisk solar power plant, with a capacity of 500 megawatts (MW), alongside a 200 megawatt-hour (MWh) energy storage facility that was connected to the grid earlier this year.
According to the minister, the second 500MW phase of the Obelisk plant is expected to be connected to the grid in the coming weeks.
Esmat further detailed progress on the Energy Valley project, which will deliver 1.7 gigawatts (GW) of solar photovoltaic capacity, supported by 4 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery storage across Minya, Qena, and Alexandria.
President El-Sisi called for continued coordination between state institutions and stronger partnerships with local and international private sector companies involved in Egypt’s national energy strategy.
He also urged that solar, wind, and energy storage projects be implemented in local currency where possible, to maximize economic returns and enhance grid resilience.
The president added that these renewable energy initiatives will help reduce carbon emissions while diversifying Egypt’s energy sources.
