Milestone role sets Egypt on path to 2028 IGU presidency and 2031 World Gas Conference host
Cairo – June 2025 – Egypt has achieved a historic milestone in the global energy sector, becoming the first country from Africa and the Middle East to assume the vice presidency of the International Gas Union (IGU). The appointment was made through the Egyptian Gas & Energy Association (EGEA), signaling the country’s rising influence in global energy policy and governance.
The vice presidency paves the way for Egypt to take on the IGU presidency for the 2028–2031 term, and to host the 31st World Gas Conference (WGC) in Cairo in 2031, which will mark the IGU’s 100th anniversary.
Leadership Team Positions Egypt on the Global Energy Stage
At the helm of this significant appointment is Khaled AbuBakr, Chairman of EGEA, who now serves as Vice President of the IGU. In this role, AbuBakr will represent the union in global energy forums including the G7, G20, and United Nations Climate Change Conferences, engaging in high-level discussions on the future of gas and its role in the global energy transition.
Joining him in this global leadership effort is Mohamed Fouad, Secretary General of EGEA, who will act as Director of the Egyptian IGU Presidency Team and Chair of the National Organization Committee for the 2031 World Gas Conference. Additionally, Karim Shaaban, EGEA’s Head of Strategy and Planning, will serve as Vice Chair of the IGU Coordination Committee and a member of the Executive Committee, contributing to long-term strategic planning and the development of the Triennial Work Program.
Strategy Focused on Balanced Energy Transition
According to Fouad, Egypt’s vision for its IGU leadership is underpinned by a forward-looking strategy. “EGEA’s updated roadmap places emphasis on low-carbon technologies, renewable energy integration, and the strategic role of natural gas in achieving a balanced and sustainable energy transition,” he stated.
The Egyptian team is expected to highlight innovative approaches to cleaner gas technologies, investment in infrastructure, and policy collaboration that aligns with both regional needs and global climate goals.
World Gas Conference 2031: A Regional First
As part of its IGU presidency, Egypt will host the World Gas Conference 2031—a prestigious event that gathers government officials, energy executives, and industry stakeholders to address key issues shaping the future of gas. The 2031 edition of the conference, marking the centennial celebration of the IGU, will be the first to take place in an African or Middle Eastern country.
The WGC is expected to bolster Egypt’s standing as a regional energy hub, attract international investment, and showcase the country’s energy reforms, LNG infrastructure, and cross-border cooperation initiatives.
A Regional Energy Leader on the Rise
Egypt’s appointment comes at a time when the country is deepening its role in regional and global energy markets. With substantial natural gas reserves, a growing LNG export capacity, and strategic geographical positioning, Egypt has emerged as a key player in Mediterranean and African energy dynamics.
By assuming leadership within the IGU, Egypt aims to not only shape global discourse on natural gas but also bring greater visibility to the energy aspirations of emerging economies in the Global South.
