Setting the Standard for Sustainability with Green Hydrogen
Launched by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in May 2021, Dubai’s green hydrogen effort has established a standard for sustainability in the MENA region. By producing more than one gigawatt hour (GWh) of green energy, the project has successfully produced around 90 tonnes of green hydrogen, which has helped to reduce about 450 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Manufacturing and Storage: A Significant Technical Advancement
The initiative, which is in partnership with Siemens Energy and Expo 2020 Dubai, uses solar energy to generate an astonishing 20 kilogrammes of hydrogen each hour. There is a petrol tank at the site that can hold hydrogen for up to 12 hours. At night, a hydrogen gas motor transforms this stored hydrogen into electricity, producing about 300 kilowatts of electrical power.
Developed for Upcoming Uses
In addition to meeting present energy demands, the green hydrogen plant is built to accommodate future advancements. The project provides a platform for evaluating hydrogen applications in a variety of industrial sectors as well as in air, land, and sea transportation.
Promoting the Clean Energy Vision of the UAE
DEWA’s MD and CEO, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, highlighted how this effort fits with the UAE’s sustainability agenda. The project helps achieve the objectives of the National Hydrogen Strategy, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050.

An International Standard for Solar Power
The project showcases Dubai’s expertise in renewable energy and is being implemented in the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world. With a projected output capacity of more than 5,000 MW by 2030, the park contributes to competitive pricing for the production of green hydrogen, thus enhancing Dubai’s standing as a global leader in solar energy pricing.
Green Hydrogen via Electrolysis
The electrolysis method, which is fully fuelled by renewable energy sources, is used to create the green hydrogen. This approach supports Dubai’s goal of being a global leader in clean energy solutions while also guaranteeing a sustainable production process.
