Dubai’s position as a global leader in sustainable technologies and renewable energy is largely due to the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) Sustainability and Innovation Centre (SIC). In partnership with universities, academic institutions, and entrepreneurs throughout the world, the Centre fosters talent and innovation through cutting-edge training programs, approved courses, and exciting competitions.
Accomplishments in Professional Certification and Training
The Centre has launched nine professional training programs since its founding, certifying more than 220 participants with recognised credentials. By striving for 100% clean energy production by 2050, these programs complement Dubai’s ambitious Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050.
Advancing the UAE’s Sustainability Objectives
His Excellency DEWA’s MD and CEO, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, highlighted the Center’s contribution to sustainability. He said, “The Sustainability and Innovation Centre is essential to advancing Dubai’s transition into a global centre for clean energy and preparing Emirati youth for the renewable energy industry. We can meet future market demands and support a sustainable economy by encouraging innovation.
Programs with a Focus on Professional Development
Numerous specialised training programs catered to different clean energy fields are available through DEWA’s SIC:
- Professional Certification Program: Connects renewable energy technology theory with practice.
- Carbon footprint assessments, reporting, and sustainability management are the main topics of the International Certification for Sustainability Managers.
- Participants who get the Renewable Energy Finance Certification are equipped to create financial models for renewable energy projects.
- Technical instruction in solar PV system design, installation, and maintenance is provided by the Solar Photovoltaic System Design Program.
- Program for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Accountants: Offers knowledge of greenhouse gas reporting and carbon pricing.
Involving the Community and Youth
Through programs like the Clean Energy Youth Program, which has trained 105 students over four cycles, the Centre encourages young people to get involved in clean energy innovation. Initiatives such as Communication for Clean Energy have raised awareness of sustainability by hosting 37 seminars and drawing over 2,000 participants.
Events like the Clean Energy Hackathon and Little Inspiring Contest inspire professionals and students to think creatively about solving practical clean energy problems.
Highlighting Clean Energy Innovation
Through the Clean Energy Technology Innovators Exhibition, the Centre showcases state-of-the-art clean energy innovations, including energy storage, digital transformation, and green hydrogen. Holograms, metaverse displays, and exhibits of DEWA’s key projects, such as the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, are available for visitors to interact with.
