DEWA’s Green Hydrogen Milestone: Promoting Middle Eastern Low-Carbon Energy

Hydrogen

Since May 2021, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has produced about 90 tonnes of green hydrogen, marking a historic milestone in the project. This project is a turning point in the Middle East’s and North Africa’s shift to sustainable energy sources as it is the first to use solar energy for the manufacture of green hydrogen.

Solar-Powered Innovation: The Basis for Producing Green Hydrogen

Developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy and Expo 2020 Dubai, the Green Hydrogen project uses state-of-the-art technology to generate more than one gigawatt-hour (GWh) of green energy. About 450 tonnes of CO2 emissions have already been significantly reduced as a result of this. Because of its flexible architecture, the project can be used in a variety of sectors, such as maritime, land, and aviation transportation.

The Green Hydrogen Project’s salient features include:

Production Capacity: Able to generate around 20 kg of hydrogen per hour.
Storage Technology: Stores solar-generated hydrogen for up to 12 hours in a petrol tank.
Energy Output: Uses a 300-kilowatt hydrogen gas motor to provide electricity at night.

Conformity to the Strategic Energy Vision of the United Arab Emirates

DEWA’s MD and CEO, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, highlighted how the project advances the UAE’s strategic objectives. He said:

“His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s goal of making the United Arab Emirates a global leader in low-carbon hydrogen is supported by this effort. It is in line with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, the National Hydrogen Strategy, and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050.

Dubai has demonstrated leadership in environmental sustainability and energy resource diversification by incorporating the Green Hydrogen project into the larger renewable energy landscape.

An International Standard: The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park

With a capacity of more than 5,000 MW by 2030, the Green Hydrogen project is situated within the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the biggest single-site solar park in the world. This initiative has established a global benchmark for competitive solar energy pricing and cost-effective green hydrogen production using electrolysis driven by renewable energy.

Growing in Order to Ensure Sustainability

The Green Hydrogen project’s creative strategy and scalability have made it a key component of the UAE’s goal to take 25% of the world market for low-carbon hydrogen. Additionally, it is essential to Dubai’s goal of producing all of its energy cleanly by 2050, acting as a regional leader in sustainable development.

This accomplishment solidifies Dubai’s standing as a leader in low-carbon energy innovation and highlights DEWA’s dedication to developing renewable energy solutions. One example of the revolutionary potential of solar-powered projects in shaping a sustainable future for the Middle East and beyond is the Green Hydrogen project.
