Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has taken another major step in reinforcing the UAE’s role as a global leader in clean energy by hosting a senior German delegation to explore partnerships in renewable energy and green hydrogen development.
Led by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, the meeting welcomed HE Sybille Pfaff, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Dubai, along with executives from some of Germany’s most prominent companies and academic institutions specializing in sustainable technologies. The visit formed part of Germany’s Energy Export Initiative, backed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, which aims to strengthen international cooperation in the energy sector.
Central to the discussions were opportunities to collaborate on green hydrogen production, storage technologies, and the exchange of technical knowledge and best practices. Delegates also considered organizing site visits to several of DEWA’s flagship projects, including the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park—widely recognized as the centerpiece of Dubai’s clean energy transition.
Al Tayer emphasized DEWA’s dedication to accelerating innovation in the energy sector. “This partnership underscores the UAE’s global leadership in sustainable development and supports our vision of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” he stated. He also highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration to fast-track the global energy transition and support the growth of the green economy.
The German delegation featured representatives from major companies such as FEV Group, a leader in energy systems engineering and consultancy; MAN Energy Solutions, specializing in hydrogen and storage technologies; Hexagon Purus, focused on hydrogen storage solutions; and MoveTech, which develops sustainable mobility systems. The German Emirati Joint Council for Industry & Commerce was also represented at the meeting.
During the session, Al Tayer provided a progress update on the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, currently the world’s largest single-site solar facility. The park’s operational capacity has reached 3,760 megawatts, supplying 21% of Dubai’s energy needs, with plans to expand capacity to 7,260 megawatts by 2030, contributing 34% of the emirate’s energy mix.
Looking ahead, DEWA is preparing for the launch of Phase 6 in 2026, which will add 1,800 megawatts using advanced bifacial photovoltaic and single-axis tracking technologies. Phase 7 is set to follow, featuring a 1,600-megawatt solar plant combined with a 1,000-megawatt battery storage system, delivering 6,000 MWh of storage capacity — positioning it among the largest integrated solar-plus-storage projects globally.
These developments are integral to the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which aim to meet 100% of the emirate’s energy demand through clean sources by mid-century.
