Consortium Gets Ready for South Oman Hydrogen Block’s First Development

Hydrogen

A multinational group is preparing to start the groundwork for a massive green hydrogen project in Oman’s south, with the goal of ensuring the long-term viability of a multibillion-dollar project.

Land Appropriated for Green Ammonia Initiative

A 341 km² land block in the Dhofar Governorate was given to a partnership in April that included the UK-based YamnaCo Ltd (Yamna), Japan’s Electric Power Development Co Ltd (J-POWER), and Electricité de France SA (EDF Group) and its subsidiary EDF Renewables. The location will be utilised to build a huge green ammonia project, which might greatly advance Oman’s goals for renewable energy.

Beginning of Advanced Project Development with a Site Visit

Yamna and EDF conducted a successful site visit in the Salalah region on Thursday, the company stated. During the tour, possible project locations were investigated, and plans were made for comprehensive site assessments and campaigns to quantify renewable energy. This is a critical turning point in the project’s evolution.

Research on Renewable Energy Is Essential for Feasibility

Experts point out that figuring out the project’s viability requires thorough site analyses and assessments of renewable energy. Through these studies, the facilities’ performance and design will be optimised, guaranteeing the project’s efficiency and sustainability.

Site Evaluations to Determine Land Adequacy

Topographical surveys, hydrological research, geotechnical analysis, and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) are all part of the site studies. These initiatives will aid in determining if the land is suitable for the construction of renewable energy infrastructure, such as solar and wind power plants, as well as facilities for producing hydrogen.

Measurement Drive for Renewable Energy

Acquiring up-to-date information about the site’s potential for solar and wind energy is a crucial part of the preparation. The correct location of turbines and panels will be ensured by the installation of solar radiation sensors and wind measuring systems, which will supply vital information for maximum energy efficiency.

4.5 GW of Renewable Energy Capacity is the goal.

With the help of battery storage and 2.5 GW of electrolyser capacity, the partnership hopes to deploy about 4.5 GW of wind and solar power. The generated green hydrogen will be shipped to a proposed ammonia plant in the Salalah Free Zone, where it will help produce one million tonnes of green ammonia annually.

Dedicated to Furthering Oman’s Strategy for Renewable Hydrogen

Yamna reiterated its dedication to advancing this historic project in partnership with J-POWER and EDF. By establishing the Sultanate as a pioneer in the generation of green hydrogen, the consortium hopes to make a substantial contribution to Oman’s renewable hydrogen plan.
