The UAE is one of the nations aiming for rapid economic expansion, urbanization, and population growth, all of which have led to a major increase in primary energy use and carbon emissions per person. According to Trading Economics, CO2 Emissions in the United Arab Emirates grew from 189338.02 KT in 2020 to 193506.94 KT in 2021. As the world grapples with the repercussions of climate change, governments and industries are investigating new solutions to capture and cut carbon emissions.

The United Arab Emirates, a country that relies significantly on its oil and gas economy, is taking significant steps to minimize its carbon footprint and tackle climate change. In recent years, one promising solution that has gained traction in the UAE is carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from industrial activities and power plants can be captured and stored underground or used for other purposes using a process called CCUS. This technology has the potential to considerably lower greenhouse gas emissions while also enabling the continued use of fossil fuels more sustainably. The United Arab Emirates has some of the most efficient carbon capture projects in the Middle East. The UAE’s CCUS projects, according to research, aim to capture five million tons per year by 2030.

With numerous major projects in the works, CCUS is gathering pace in the UAE. The Al Reyadah CCUS project in Abu Dhabi is one example that reflects efforts toward carbon capture in UAE. ADNOC reached a significant turning point in its quest to fulfill its obligations to emissions reduction and support the UAE’s efforts to decarbonize the country’s economy with the successful completion of the Al-Reyadah CCUS plant in 2016. Al-Reyadah is the first commercial-scale CCUS station in the area, with an annual CO2 collection capacity of 800,000 tonnes. In order to securely store the CO2 and improve oil recovery, Al-Reyadah processes the CO2 captured from Emirates Steel Industries before injecting it into their onshore oilfields. As one of the largest industrial-scale CCUS projects in the world, the project is a partnership between Masdar and Abu Dhabi National Oil Corporation (ADNOC).

The UAE’s national objectives and plans demonstrate its dedication to CCUS. The UAE’s Energy Strategy for 2050 intends to reduce carbon emissions by 70% while increasing the share of clean energy to 50% of the nation’s overall energy mix. Similarly, the UAE seeks to capture 30% of its CO2 emissions by 2030. In addition to being a critical step towards the UAE’s climate goals, the use of CCUS technology has the potential to open up new economic opportunities.


The UAE’s investment in CCUS technology is a promising milestone in the nation’s attempts to lessen its carbon footprint and fight climate change. The UAE is well-positioned to become a global leader in the adoption and deployment of CCUS technologies, with large projects already underway and dedicated research and development opportunities.
