DHAKA — Facing mounting energy risks linked to tensions in the Middle East, Bangladesh is ramping up its shift toward renewable power, unveiling new plans to expand its solar capacity.
The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has issued tenders for 10 grid-connected solar projects with a combined capacity of 495 megawatts. Each project will range between 25 MW and 100 MW, with private sector investors expected to lead development. The facilities are planned near existing substations to strengthen grid reliability and ease pressure on fossil fuel-based generation. Authorities have set June 28 as the deadline for final bid submissions.
While Bangladesh has long outlined ambitions to grow its renewable energy sector, implementation has lagged. However, rising geopolitical instability—particularly the ongoing Iran conflict—has injected fresh urgency into the country’s energy strategy.
Home to around 175 million people, Bangladesh relies heavily on imported oil, coal, and liquefied natural gas, making it highly exposed to fluctuations in global energy markets. Recent disruptions, including fuel shortages tied to the conflict and restricted access through the Strait of Hormuz, have forced the government to act swiftly. Measures such as fuel rationing and reduced office hours have already been introduced to manage the strain.
Officials say expanding solar power is now central to securing a more stable and cost-effective electricity supply, while reducing dependence on volatile fuel imports. In parallel, the government is promoting cleaner transport by approving tax incentives for fully electric vehicles, including buses and trucks, building on earlier initiatives targeting electric school transport.
Energy analysts caution that the transition will require substantial investment in infrastructure, particularly in power grids, energy storage systems, and charging networks, to ensure long-term success.
