Foulath Holding, a leading industrial investment company and the parent firm of Bahrain Steel and SULB, has teamed up with Yellow Door Energy, the Middle East and Africa’s top sustainable energy developer, to execute a landmark 123-Megawatt-Peak (MWp) solar energy project. The initiative includes the construction of the world’s largest single-site rooftop solar power plant, boasting a capacity of 50 MWp and powered by 77,000 solar panels installed over a newly built 262,000-square-meter stockyard shed.
This groundbreaking project was unveiled during the third edition of Gateway Gulf, Bahrain’s premier investment forum, held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Bahrain Bay. The event, hosted by the Bahrain Economic Development Board, attracted global investors, policymakers, and business leaders from across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and the Gulf region.
Spanning ten rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and four ground-mounted PV installations, the 123-MWp site is set to become one of the largest industrial-scale on-site solar ventures in the world. Equipped with more than 189,900 high-efficiency solar panels across 707,000 square meters, the project is anticipated to produce 200 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy in its first year, cutting carbon emissions by 90,000 metric tons. This initiative is a major step toward Foulath Holding’s sustainability goals and aligns with Bahrain’s Net Zero 2060 strategy.
As the project’s solar developer, Yellow Door Energy will fully manage its financing, design, construction, commissioning, and long-term operations under a power purchase agreement (PPA). This model allows businesses to transition to renewable energy without upfront costs or operational risks. To date, Yellow Door Energy’s solar projects have generated over 1 billion kWh and reduced carbon emissions by 400,000 metric tons. With a growing pipeline of 400 MWp in solar projects and over a decade of experience, the company continues to lead the region’s clean energy transition.
Foulath Holding remains committed to sustainable growth and responsible operations, supporting Bahrain’s 2030 Vision and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
H.E. Noor bint Ali Alkhulaif, Bahrain’s Minister of Sustainable Development and Chief Executive of the Bahrain EDB, emphasized:
“Bahrain stands as a global leader in sustainable innovation. This landmark solar project not only strengthens our leadership in clean energy but also reflects our firm commitment to building a resilient and competitive future.”
Meshary Al-Judaimi, Chairman of Foulath Holding, added:
“Our investment of nearly USD 250 million in sustainability projects highlights our dedication to environmental stewardship and community well-being. This solar project reflects that ongoing commitment.”
Sherif ElKholy, Managing Director at Actis and Chairman of Yellow Door Energy, also commented:
“This project sets a new global benchmark for decarbonizing industrial sectors like steel production. It shows how competitive and capable clean energy has become in supporting large-scale industries.”
Dilip George, Group CEO of Foulath Holding, expressed pride in the collaboration:
“This partnership with Yellow Door Energy positions Foulath as a global leader in sustainable industrial development. We’re proud to deliver the world’s largest rooftop solar project and contribute to Bahrain’s green future.”
Yellow Door Energy’s CEO, Jeremy Crane, concluded:
“We’re honored to support Foulath in this historic PPA. As we celebrate our 10-year anniversary, we’re also celebrating a milestone in renewable energy with the largest rooftop solar power plant in the world. This project reflects our mission to green heavy industries and contribute to Bahrain’s Net Zero 2060 vision.”
