Chinese Solar Giant Secures Major Deal in Saudi Arabia
Chinese solar tracker manufacturer Arctech Solar Holding Co Ltd (SHA:688408) has been selected to supply its advanced tracking technology for the over 2-gigawatt (GW) Al Sadawi Solar Project in Saudi Arabia. The contract was awarded by Shanghai Electric Power Co (HKG:2727), which is overseeing the project’s implementation.
The Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA) confirmed the partnership on Monday, highlighting it as a major milestone for both the region and Arctech’s growing presence in the Gulf solar market.
Desert-Ready Technology for Harsh Conditions
The Al Sadawi PV park will be equipped with Arctech’s SkyLine II solar tracking system, a cutting-edge solution engineered to endure extreme desert environments, including wind speeds of up to 55 meters per second. The system is designed to maximize efficiency while withstanding the region’s challenging climatic conditions.
Located in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, the project will cover approximately 40 square kilometers (15.4 square miles) of land. According to current timelines, the facility is expected to begin delivering electricity to the national grid by Q2 of 2027.
Project Backed by Multinational Renewable Energy Consortium
Development rights for the Sadawi solar project were awarded at the end of 2024 to a powerful consortium comprising Masdar (UAE), GD Power (China), and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). The consortium secured the rights during Round 5 of Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Programme (NREP)—a key initiative driving the Kingdom’s shift toward cleaner energy sources.
Following their successful bid, the trio signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), locking in the project’s role in the Kingdom’s strategic renewable energy roadmap.
Powering Over 700,000 Saudi Homes
Once operational, the Al Sadawi PV park is projected to generate over six billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually. This output is enough to meet the annual power needs of more than 700,000 Saudi households, making it one of the largest and most impactful solar projects in the country.
Arctech will also provide its proprietary SCADA monitoring platform, which will manage and optimize the site’s day-to-day operations to ensure peak performance and reliability.
Expanding Arctech’s Footprint in the Gulf
The Al Sadawi project marks another significant win for Arctech in the Gulf region. With this latest deal, the company’s total solar tracker contract volume in Saudi Arabia for 2025 now exceeds 4 GW.
Earlier this year, Arctech was also tapped to supply trackers for the 1.5-GW Al Ajban solar project in Abu Dhabi, further solidifying its position as a leading technology provider for mega-scale renewable energy developments in the Middle East.
