UAE-based renewable energy developer AMEA Power has officially commenced construction on a 50MW solar power plant in Gontougo, northeastern Ivory Coast. Developed through its subsidiary AMEA Gontougo, the project is backed by Dutch investor FMO and German investor DEG, with a combined investment of $60 million.
Milestone for Ivory Coast’s Renewable Energy Sector
The Bondoukou solar plant, expected to be commissioned later this year, marks a significant step in Ivory Coast’s clean energy transition. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, AMEA Power Chairman Hussain Al Nowais underscored the project’s importance. “The 50MW solar plant is a landmark achievement for Ivory Coast and a testament to AMEA Power’s dedication to delivering clean energy solutions across Africa,” he said. “This groundbreaking ceremony symbolizes our strong partnership with the government and the people of Ivory Coast on this transformative journey.”
Driving Renewable Energy Growth
This initiative marks AMEA Power’s first project in Ivory Coast and aligns with the nation’s ambitious goal of increasing its renewable energy share. The country has expanded its solar capacity from 13MW in 2021 to 46MW by the end of 2023, with a target of reaching 45% renewable energy in its overall energy mix by 2030.
In addition to the Bondoukou plant, AMEA Power is developing a second 50MW solar project in Ivory Coast, further reinforcing its commitment to supporting the country’s clean energy ambitions. With natural gas currently dominating Ivory Coast’s electricity generation, these solar projects play a crucial role in diversifying the energy mix and meeting government sustainability targets.
