ACWA Power Wins Noor Midelt II and III Projects in Morocco, Strengthening Role in Africa’s Renewable Energy Future

ACWA Power Wins

Saudi-listed energy giant to deliver 800MW of solar capacity and 602MWh of battery storage under Morocco’s clean energy goals

Rabat, Morocco – In a major boost to Morocco’s renewable energy ambitions, ACWA Power, the Saudi-listed energy transition leader, has been awarded the contracts for the Noor Midelt II and III solar power projects. The twin developments will feature a combined 800 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaic capacity and a 602 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS), reinforcing ACWA Power’s position as a key player in Africa’s clean energy transformation.

Awarded by the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) through an international tender, the two projects will be developed under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model and are backed by a 30-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with MASEN as the off-taker, according to Zawya.

Cutting-Edge Solar Plus Storage Projects

Each of the Noor Midelt II and III plants will deliver 400MWp of solar energy, supported by a BESS with a peak discharge capacity of 230MWac for two hours. These hybrid systems are designed to enhance grid flexibility, meet peak electricity demand, and advance renewable integration within Morocco’s national grid.

The projects are a cornerstone of Morocco’s plan to achieve its 2030 renewable energy target, and are expected to avoid 1.2 million tonnes of carbon emissions over their lifetime.

Executive Voices: A Milestone in Regional Energy Leadership

Marco Arcelli, CEO of ACWA Power, emphasized the company’s long-term commitment to Africa’s energy future:

“We are proud to deepen our contribution to Morocco’s ambitious 2030 targets by delivering cutting-edge, reliable, and cost-effective renewable energy and storage capabilities that will not only meet peak demand but also foster a greener, more resilient energy future for the Kingdom.”

With an investment footprint of $9.5 billion in Africa, ACWA Power is the continent’s largest investor in energy infrastructure.

Hashim Ghabashi, President of the MEASEA region at ACWA Power, described the win as a critical step in Morocco’s journey toward energy independence:

“The Noor Midelt 2 & 3 projects mark another pivotal moment in Morocco’s journey towards energy independence and sustainable development. These innovative hybrid solutions underscore ACWA Power’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Kingdom’s ambitious 2030 energy vision.”

Local Impact and Environmental Stewardship

Omar Alaoui Mhamdi, ACWA Power’s Country General Manager in Morocco, highlighted the broader benefits of the projects:

“We look forward to continuing our close collaboration with the Moroccan government to develop low-carbon energy solutions that are aligned with national priorities and deliver tangible socio-economic benefits.”

Beyond environmental gains, the Noor Midelt projects are expected to support local job creation, skills development, and community-level investment in regions where the plants will be located.

Supporting Morocco’s Energy Transition

The Noor Midelt II and III developments are a crucial part of Morocco’s strategy to diversify its energy mix, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and establish itself as a regional leader in sustainable energy infrastructure. With its abundant solar resources and proactive policy framework, Morocco continues to attract leading global players like ACWA Power.

By combining utility-scale solar with large-scale battery storage, the projects will serve as a model for future energy systems in Africa and beyond—delivering dispatchable, clean electricity that supports both grid stability and climate commitments.
