Strategic Collaboration for the Development of Green Hydrogen
Hysata, an Australian electrolyser business, has partnered with ACWA Power, a prominent Saudi developer and operator of power generating, water desalination, and green hydrogen plants, to launch commercial-scale demonstrations of Hysata’s electrolysis technology in Saudi Arabia.
The Initial Phase of Large-Scale Electrolyser Implementation
An important turning point in Hysata’s path to widespread electrolyser deployment is the agreement. The company hopes to boost its commercial growth and help promote green hydrogen production by incorporating its technology into ACWA Power’s projects.
Hydrogen Technology Acceleration for the NEOM Project
According to Hysata, this collaboration will accelerate the development of its electrolysers and take advantage of ACWA Power’s experience managing significant capital projects. Currently leading the 2.2-gigawatt NEOM green hydrogen project, which is more than 60% finished, is ACWA Power. It is anticipated that NEOM would generate 600 tonnes of hydrogen per day when it is fully operational in 2026.
The CEO of Hysata Draws Attention to the Middle East’s Potential for Green Hydrogen
Hysata CEO Paul Barrett stressed that ACWA Power is a perfect partner because of its vast portfolio of large-scale green hydrogen projects and its knowledge of energy infrastructure. Barrett emphasised that the decarbonisation of heavy industries and the development of new export markets for ammonia, steel, and green iron depend on green hydrogen. He also commended the Middle East’s dedication to green hydrogen initiatives and its wealth of renewable energy resources.
At ACWA Power’s Innovation Days Event, an agreement was signed.
The agreement was completed in February 2025 during ACWA Power’s Innovation Days event in Riyadh. At the occasion, ACWA Power also revealed a number of international collaborations, including those with Saudi Aramco, Bluewater Bio in the UK, Dow Chemical, and Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany. Additionally, the business and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) expanded their research partnership.
Increasing Cooperation in Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Research
A significant contract with Fraunhofer IMWS, Fraunhofer ISC, and Fraunhofer IWES creates a foundation for research on green hydrogen and renewable energy. By utilising Fraunhofer’s knowledge of materials science, energy systems, and hydrogen technologies, this partnership seeks to promote innovation in clean energy solutions.
Dedication to Water Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy
ACWA Power’s Executive Vice President of Innovation and New Technology, Thomas Altmann, reiterated the organization’s dedication to sustainability. In order to create a robust and sustainable energy and water infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, he said, ACWA Power’s emphasis on developing desalination technologies, renewable energy sources, and green hydrogen generation will be essential.
Developing European Green Hydrogen Supply Chains
Apart from its partnership with Hysata, ACWA Power has also signed contracts with Snam of Italy and Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) of Germany. While the cooperation with Snam looks at cooperative investments in creating a green hydrogen supply chain from Saudi Arabia to Europe, the Memorandum of Understanding with SEFE intends to streamline the production and delivery of green hydrogen to European markets.
