ABU DHABI, 20 April 2025 (WAM) — In a move to reinforce international collaboration in sustainability, a high-level delegation from the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), led by Chairman Dr. Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan, has completed an official visit to Singapore and Japan. The mission focused on advancing partnerships in water resource management and sustainable energy solutions.
The goal of the tour was to promote the development of climate-resilient infrastructure and the sharing of state-of-the-art knowledge, especially in the areas of smart technology for managing floodwater and rainwater. In line with Abu Dhabi’s long-term objectives for water security and sustainability, discussions also looked at creative ways to demand management and water resource planning.
Dr. Al Jarwan underlined the DoE’s dedication to promoting international cooperation, saying that working with governmental organizations, research centers, and prominent private sector companies in Singapore and Japan offers a great chance to take advantage of cutting-edge technologies and innovative approaches.
“At the Department of Energy, we believe that tackling climate challenges requires integrated action and strong international cooperation,” said Dr. Al Jarwan. “Partnering with sustainability leaders helps us to develop robust solutions that will secure the future of our water and energy systems for generations to come.”
Strategic Engagements in Singapore
While in Singapore, the delegation was received by Jamal Abdulla Al Suwaidi, UAE Ambassador to Singapore. Meetings centered on expanding cooperation in sustainable infrastructure, public-private partnerships, and the application of smart technologies in water and energy sectors.
The UAE’s plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 was a major topic of discussion, as were Singapore’s sophisticated stormwater management systems and energy-saving measures. Dr. Amy Khor, prominent Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment, was among the prominent Singaporean officials with whom Dr. Al Jarwan and his colleagues had high-level talks.
To learn more about artificial intelligence’s potential in water management, the group also visited with officials from SpaceAge Labs and the Public Utilities Board (PUB). During site visits, prominent projects like as Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park and the Marina Barrage—world-renowned examples of climate-adaptive urban infrastructure—were shown.
On the energy front, engagements with Tuas Power and the Energy Market Authority (EMA) explored opportunities in renewable energy collaboration. The delegation also toured the Water Research Centre at the National University of Singapore (NUS) to assess potential joint research initiatives.
Key Collaborations in Japan
Meetings with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), the Japan Water Agency (JWA), and cutting-edge companies like WOTA and Kajima were part of the visit’s Japan portion. Conversations centered on creative climate solutions, AI-driven technologies, and collaborative approaches to water management.
The delegation toured several high-impact infrastructure projects, including the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel—famously known as the “Underground Cathedral”—a vast flood control system renowned for its engineering sophistication.
These engagements underscore Abu Dhabi’s proactive approach to building resilient, sustainable systems through international partnerships and knowledge sharing.
