In the Middle East, Korea Western Power Co., Ltd. (KOWEPO) has formally started building a historic solar power project. This ground-breaking project, the 1,500MW Ajban solar power project, is the first significant solar project in the area to be awarded to a South Korean business. On November 19, only 70 kilometres east of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, the ceremonial event took place.
Cooperation with World Leaders in Renewable Energy
Notable attendees at the project opening included officials from EDF-R, the renewable energy division of Electricite de France (EDF), delegates from Masdar, the UAE’s largest renewable energy investment company, and Um Kyung-il, Vice President of Technology and Safety at KOWEPO. This cooperation demonstrates the global alliances propelling the renewable energy industry.
South Korea’s Largest Solar Investment
The solar plant is anticipated to be operational by late 2026, and the Ajban project requires an expenditure of more than 1 trillion won. In terms of both capacity and budget, it is the biggest solar project a South Korean company has ever worked on. This initiative strengthens KOWEPO’s position in the Middle Eastern renewable energy industry and comes after the company’s successful Oman Mana solar power project.
Long-Term Energy Operations and Commitments
Following construction, KOWEPO will be in charge of the plant’s operations and maintenance (O&M). The Abu Dhabi government will guarantee a 30-year agreement for the sale of the generated electricity to the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). This long-term agreement highlights the project’s strategic significance in the UAE’s shift to sustainable energy sources.

The Ajban project is significant, according to Lee Jeong-bok, President of KOWEPO, who said, “This project showcases South Korea’s cutting-edge technology and competitiveness in the Middle Eastern renewable energy market.” He was also upbeat about future partnerships with EDF-R to land further renewable energy projects in the area.
